Square Box Card Tutorial

We made this square box card at my pop-up gift card holders class. When you remove the bellyband for this gift card holder, the flat card opens into a box. It’s a great way to give a gift card, so it doesn’t get lost under the tree. A big thank you goes to Valita Reynolds where I found the idea. I altered the measurements of Valita’s rectangular box card to make this square one. If you would like to make your own box card, you can find all the supplies for purchase at the end of my tutorial.

Square Box Card Tutorial

Step One

1. Start with a 10” x 7” piece of Gumball Green CS. On the 10” side, score at 2”, 3-½”, 6-½” and 8” marks.

Step Two

2. On the 7” side, score at the 1-½” and 5-½” marks.

Step Three

3a. Put the diagonal plate on your Simply Scored Board. On the long side, score on the diagonal from the 5” mark, just until you reach the first score intersection.

3b. Turn your card stock 180 and score again.

3c. Flip the piece of card stock over to the backside and score again.

3d. Turn your card stock180 and score again.

Step Four

4. Cut along the yellow lines as shown. The 4 corners will be cut off and you will make 4 square tabs.

Step Five

5a. Fold the box along the blue highlighted score lines as shown. Orient your card stock so that one of the long sides is towards you. Fold the piece away from you along the score line.

5b. Keep the piece folded down and fold the diagonal scores towards you.

5c. Still keeping the piece folded down, fold the tabs away from you. Unfold. Repeat steps 5a-5c for the opposite side.

5d. For the sides, fold the piece toward the center along the second score line from the outside.

5e. Next fold the score line back towards the outside. Unfold. Repeat steps 5d-5e for the opposite side.

5f. This is how your piece will look when it’s completely folded.

Step Six

6. Place sticky strip on the four tab pieces.

Step Seven

7a. Remove the sticky strip liner and adhere the tabs to the OUTSIDE of the box. The photo above shows the closest two tabs adhered to the sides of the box.

7b. This is what the piece looks like when all FOUR tabs are adhered.

Step Eight

8. Cut two 4” x ½” pieces of Cherry Cobbler card stock. Adhere them to the opening of the box

Step Nine

9. To make the bellyband, start with a 8- ½” x 1” strip of Cherry Cobbler card stock. On the 8-½” side, score at the 4” and 8-1/8” marks.

Step Ten

10. Put adhesive on the tab end

Step Eleven

11. Remove the sticky strip liner and bring the ends together to form a bellyband. Note: One side of the bellyband will be longer than the other.

Step Twelve

12a. Slide the bellyband over the box to hold it shut. Note: The shorter side of the bellyband faces up.

12b. Side view

Step Thirteen

13a. To make the bow, run TWO 9” x 2” pieces of Seasons of Style Paper through the Big Shot with the Gift Bow Die.

13b. Adhere the bow together with multipurpose liquid glue crossing over the two bow pieces.

13c. Bow shown with just one more side to glue down.

13d. Adhere a 5/8” square of red glimmer paper to the center.

Step Fourteen

14. Adhere the bow to the bellyband on an angle.

Step Fifteen

15. Decorate the inside of the box as desired. I stamped a greeting from the Delightful Dozen stamp set in Gumball Green Ink on an oval from the oval framelits collections. I then adhered the oval onto a label from the deco labels collection.
